The question sets on the network are written to the 2026 numbering and Michigan still tests on the 2023 edition, so a Michigan bank with the 2023 numbering arrives the day PSI's bulletin moves. Until then the practice page lists the sections that carry a different number in the 2023 book.

What the paper actually is

PSI's candidate information bulletin for the Michigan Bureau of Construction Codes sets it out. The journeyman electrician exam is 80 questions in 150 minutes. The master electrician exam is 76 questions in 180 minutes. Both are open book and both are graded at 75 percent.

Open book is the part people misread. The answers are in the room, and the thing that runs out is the time you spend deciding where to look. That is what the questions here train.

The edition question, answered once

The bulletin says the items are based on the 2023 edition of the National Electrical Code. Michigan enforces that edition with its own Part 8 rules added to it, and a draft rule set that would move the state to the 2026 edition has not been filed.

So study material written on the 2026 book points at some section numbers that Michigan does not use yet. Where a section moved, the pages here print the 2023 number beside the 2026 one rather than making you work it out.

What you can carry in

The code book, and the state law books: 2016 PA 407, 1972 PA 230 and the Michigan Part 8 rules. Everything has to be bound.

The NEC Handbook is not allowed in the examination room, and no highlighting, underlining or marks of your own are permitted on any of it. Factory tabs and factory markings are the exception. The book rules page is the one to read before you tab anything.

How it works

  1. Sit a set of questions. The practice questions are free and grouped by topic. Every miss comes back with the working and the section behind it.
  2. Drill the lookups. The calculators and sprints are built around the tables the paper leans on, and every result names the table it came from rather than reprinting it.
  3. Read the page for the thing you missed. Each topic page here cites the section or the bulletin line it rests on, so you can check it in your own book.

If you failed it

Journeyman, master and sign specialist candidates get two attempts within one year. Two failures in two years means waiting a year before you can try again. The fee is $100 an attempt and it is not refundable or transferable.

Whether you may sit the paper at all is a licensing question rather than an exam question, and it is answered on the sister site.

What this site does not do

None of these questions came off a real paper, and nobody can promise you a result on the strength of a question set. What the questions do is put the mistake in front of you at a desk instead of at the testing center, with the reason attached.
