Michigan Electrician Exam Tools: Calculators and Sprints
Four hands-on labs and ten tools, each showing the working rather than only the answer, because the working is the part that transfers to the paper. They hold the 2026 table values, and where a section number differs in the 2023 book Michigan tests on, the tool prints both.

Four hands-on labs
A lab is a page you work rather than read. You drag something, turn something or connect something, and it answers with the number it just changed and the section that governs it. All four run in the browser and none of them asks for an account.
Conduit bending simulator. Drag the rise, turn the angle dial, and the multiplier, the shrink, the take up and every mark move with it, with the run counted against the 360 degrees between pull points.
Switch wiring lab. Drag conductor ends onto terminals, flip the switches, and a checker walks the whole toggle table and names the section behind each fault.
Box fill lab. Drop conductors, grounds, a device yoke, clamps and fittings into a drawn box and watch the fill rise by the allowance that counts each one.
Grounding electrode lab. Put electrodes in the ground, bond them into one system, and size the grounding electrode conductor from Table 250.66 and its ceilings.
The hub at all four labs describes each one at more length, and three pages carry the method in prose: conduit bending math, 3-way switch wiring and 4-way switch wiring.
The calculators
Voltage drop calculator. Chapter 9 Table 8 conductor properties built in, both the resistance method and the approximate formula, one beside the other so you can see where they part.
Conduit fill calculator. Chapter 9 Table 1 for the percentages, Table 4 for the raceway areas and Table 5 for the conductor dimensions, with the fill worked out step by step.
Box fill calculator. Every box size in 314.16, and the six categories that get counted differently, shown as a count rather than as a total you have to trust.
Wire size calculator. Load in, conductor out, with the ampacity, the correction, the adjustment and the termination limit each shown as its own line.
Ampacity calculator. Table 310.16 with ambient correction, conductor bundling adjustment and the 110.14(C) termination cap applied in order, so you can see which one actually decided the answer.
Motor calculator. Full load current from the Article 430 tables, then conductors, overload and the short circuit and ground fault device, each from its own rule.
Transformer calculator. kVA to amps on both sides, and the primary and secondary overcurrent protection worked from the percentages.
Ohm's law calculator. Any two of voltage, current, resistance and power give you the other two, with single phase and three phase power kept separate.
The two timed sprints
Ampacity sprint. Table 310.16 against a clock. You are given a conductor and a temperature column and you name the ampacity.
Wire size sprint. The same table in reverse. You are given an ampacity and you name the conductor.
These two exist because of the clock rather than the code. The journeyman paper allows just under two minutes a question and a candidate who has to think about Table 310.16 has already spent thirty seconds of it.
The hours calculator, on the licensing site
One tool sits on our sister site because it belongs to the licensing side rather than the exam side.
Hours to exam takes the hours you have and gives you the date you can sit, tied to the rule that sets it. Michigan requires 8,000 hours and 4 years as a registered apprentice for the journeyman license, and 12,000 hours over at least 6 years for the master, so both a count and a calendar have to clear.

Which edition these tools hold
The table values in these calculators were read out of the 2026 National Electrical Code. Michigan's examinations are on the 2023 edition, so the honest thing is to say exactly what that does and does not mean.
The table numbers are the same in both books. Table 310.16 for ampacity, 314.16 for box fill, and Chapter 9 Tables 1, 4, 5 and 8 for raceway fill and conductor properties. We read all of those at those numbers in the 2026 text, and our record of the numbers that moved between the editions has no entry for Article 310, Article 314 or Chapter 9.
On the values inside the tables we are more careful. We read the 2026 tables and we have not set them against a 2023 printing row by row. So use the tools to learn the method and check any number that decides an answer in the book you are carrying, which is the book the examination is written against.
One subsection is worth watching. The volume allowance table inside 314.16 is a case our crosswalk records as unresolved between the editions, so read the subsection heading in your own copy rather than carrying a letter across.
The numbers that differ, and where they show up
Two of the ten tools name a section that carries a different number in the 2023 book, and both print the 2023 number beside the 2026 one.
- The transformer calculator cites overcurrent protection of transformers at 450.5 in the 2026 book (450.3 in the 2023 edition Michigan tests on).
- The Ohm's law calculator points at load calculations in Article 120 in the 2026 book (Article 220 in the 2023 edition Michigan tests on).
The other eight cite sections that read the same in both editions, including 110.14(C), 240.4(D), 240.6, the Article 430 motor tables and Table 310.16.

How to use them without learning the wrong thing
A calculator that gives you an answer teaches you nothing you can carry into a room where calculators are prohibited. That is why every tool here shows the steps.
Work the problem on paper first, then run it through the tool and compare the steps rather than the totals. A wrong total tells you that something broke. A step by step comparison tells you which step.
Then log the step you got wrong. Twenty problems logged that way point at your two real weak spots inside a week.

Can you use a calculator on the Michigan electrician exam?
Calculators are on the PSI bulletin's list of prohibited electronic devices and go into secure storage before you enter the room. The bulletin does not say what the workstation provides instead, so call PSI on 855-579-4635 and ask before your date.
Which NEC edition do these calculators use?
The table values were read out of the 2026 edition. The table numbers are the same in both books, and where a section number differs the tool prints the 2023 number beside it. Check any value that decides an answer in the 2023 book you carry into the exam.
